The Story Behind Opulence

Opulence was born from a desire to celebrate the richness of Black identity—not just in golds and jewels, but in joy, in resilience, and in legacy. It’s a visual love letter to the beauty that’s often overlooked, the radiance that exists in our everyday lives, and the grandeur we carry within us even when the world tries to dim it.

This show is about reclaiming luxury. Not the kind you find in designer stores or high society galas, but the kind that’s stitched into the Sunday best of grandmothers, in the careful braiding of hair, in the rich foods passed down for generations, and in the unapologetic laughter of friends who’ve survived everything. Opulence turns the lens on how Black people redefine wealth—through creativity, culture, connection, and pride.

With bold colors, elegant styling, and intentional storytelling, each piece in Opulence is crafted to honor our inherent worth. The show invites viewers to witness and reflect on the truth: our existence is already extravagant.

Artist Statement for “Opulence” Exhibit:
“In ‘Opulence,’ I invite you to embark on a visual and cultural journey that transcends time, weaving through the rich tapestry of black history and the profound significance of black hair. This exhibition is a celebration of opulence, not just in terms of wealth but in the opulence of identity, resilience, and cultural expression.
The essence of ‘Opulence’ lies in its exploration of black hair as a dynamic and symbolic force, transcending mere strands to tell stories of conformity and resistance, of societal navigation, and of unapologetic presence. We delve into the duality inherent in the artistry of black hairstyles, reflecting the ability to conform to societal expectations while gallantly asserting a unique presence.
Beginning with a nod to the historical roots of African hairstyles, ‘Opulence’ unfolds a narrative that spans continents and centuries. From traditional African styles that echoed cultural heritage to the evolution and adaptation forced by the transatlantic slave trade and the African diaspora, every twist and turn in the narrative is a testament to the enduring spirit of a people.
The heart of the exhibit beats with the pulse of modern black hairstyles—afros, braids, dreadlocks, and more—celebrated as bold statements of black beauty and pride. Yet, as we celebrate, we also confront the social and political implications of black hair, shedding light on discrimination and the ongoing struggle for acceptance in various spheres of society.
‘Opulence’ is not just a visual feast; it is a call for introspection and dialogue. Through interactive elements, multimedia presentations, and artistic expressions, visitors are invited to immerse themselves in the artistry and diversity of black hair. The exhibit extends beyond the gallery walls, engaging with the local black community and hairstylists, ensuring authenticity and a genuine connection to the theme.
In creating ‘Opulence,’ my aim is to offer a space where narratives converge, where the past dialogues with the present, and where the very essence of opulence is defined by the resilience, beauty, and cultural richness embodied in black hair. This is an homage to the opulence of identity, an exploration of the multifaceted nature of blackness, and an invitation to celebrate the artistry that thrives in the strands that weave our stories together.”
